FAQ

Question:
Why doesn't Penfriend predict capital letters or punctuation properly?

Affecting products:
Penfriend W3 before v1.04, on Windows 98 and Windows Me.

Problem:

When I use Penfriend it does not insert capital letters or punctuation properly. Lower case letters work OK for me.

Solution:

When Penfriend wants to type letters into your word processor, it sends 'fake' messages pretending to be from the keyboard, to the word processor. If the letters or other characters include pressing Shift, Penfriend does this using a system called WM_KEYDOWN.

Windows 98 was different from Windows 95 in the way it tolerated 'fake' keystrokes involving the Shift key. Penfriend W3 was modified to use WM_CHAR instead of WM_KEYDOWN in version 1.04. This resolved the problem.

If your version of Penfriend is older, please get an upgrade.
