Press ReleaseRelease of Penfriend XL with word prediction in Scottish GaelicPenfriend are pleased to announce the release of a new version of Penfriend XL adding Scottish Gaelic to the 8 other languages in which the program can predict. Penfriend XL is a multi-lingual word predictor/screen reader/onscreen keyboard. It will assist those with dyslexia and physical disabilities in Gaelic education and may also assist those learning the language. For those learning the language, the software can predict words within a few key strokes that are correctly spelt. The onscreen keyboards in Penfriend XL now have keys for the accented characters in Gaelic, simplifying typing of the language Penfriend is a Scottish company which has been producing word prediction software for the SEN market since 1993. The initial programs Penfriend XP are for prediction in English only, but their latest product Penfriend XL also predicts in several of the main European languages. Penfriend XP is widely used in Scotland and some councils have it in all their schools. This work was carried out with support from Stòrlann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig – which was set up in 1999 to co-ordinate the production and distribution of teaching materials for Gaelic education. The project was funded both by Stòrlann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig and Penfriend.
